Refreshing Your Look: How to Stay on Trend on a Budget

Straight leg jeans

Let's talk about the idea, or misconception, that we need to buy a new wardrobe every time the seasons change. I used to fall for the fashion industry’s seasonal imperative, too, scrolling and saving links for sweaters and boots to create what I thought I needed. But lately I've been leaning into something different:  taking inventory instead of taking myself shopping. Because it's not about having more, it's about making what you already own work.

This fall, I've been asking myself, what do I already have that still makes me look and feel good? What pieces can I remix to create an elevated look without maxing out my credit cards? What do I have in my closet that supports the lifestyle that I'm living right now?

Here are the six pieces I'm building on this season. These are the essentials that keep me looking put together, on trend, and comfortable without needless shopping. I consider them my anchors. You may, too, particularly if your budget or creativity are running low.

An Oversized Blazer

It pulls everything together. Leggings? Slip them on. Jeans and a tee? Go for it. You can even wear your blazer over a hoodie on chilly days. I love that it makes me feel structured but still relaxed. Stick to neutral and you'll wear it with everything

Straight Leg Jeans

They give you shape without suffocating you, no matter your body type. For curvier bodies, these jeans fit over your curves without clinging in the wrong places. For slimmer frames, they add structure without swallowing your shape, just giving enough form to balance everything. Medium to dark wash is my go-to as it's timeless and honestly makes everything look a little bit more elevated.

Lightweight Sweater

Think of this as your base layer. You can wear it with a cardigan, blazer, or even a slip dress. Neutral colors work best here, so think camel, gray, or black. It's that foundational piece that brings everything together.

Long Cardigan or Trench

Think of this as your grab-and-go piece. This is what you throw on when you're headed to brunch or stepping out to run errands; it adds movement and a little edge.

Chunky Knit Sweater

Texture matters in the Fall. Chunky knits give you a rich feel without looking like you’re trying too hard. I like mine a little oversized so I can half-tuck it or layer it over anything. Pair it with your straight-leg jeans for a timeless look.

The Everyday Shoe: A Casual Sneaker and Boot

You really do need both, and no, it's not doing too much. You're covering your bases. A clean, neutral sneaker gives you an easy on-the-go look.  The boot is necessary when you want to have a more polished look without overthinking it.  Between the two, you have your bases covered.

4 folded chunky sweaters

Make it a seasonal habit.

Now that you have Fall covered, think ahead to the upcoming seasons. Go shopping in your own closet and find the half-dozen or so key pieces you need for the colder months and holidays: the staples that will make getting dressed easy.  You don’t need a new wardrobe each season— just a strategic refresh—to look and feel your best on a budget.
