Sink, Surf, or Shape the Future: the Real Choice We Face with Ai

wave with an ai design

Let’s not waste time sugarcoating it: a tidal wave of artificial intelligence is crashing toward us. It’s not looming in the distant future. It’s here. Right now. And it’s transforming everything in its path — whether we’re ready or not.

Some people are already riding this wave like seasoned surfers. They’re building, creating, learning, and thriving. But too many are stuck on the shoreline. On one side, people are paralyzed by fear. They say AI is dangerous — that it’s Skynet come to life, that it’s going to steal jobs, that it’s moving too fast to trust. On the other side, folks are caught up in the fun — turning their selfies into anime, making talking cat videos, and exploring novelty instead of opportunity.

And both sides? They’re missing the point. Because when this wave hits — and it will hit — those stuck in fear and those stuck in fun will be equally unprepared. And it’s not just about us. The ones who get swept away? They’ll be our kids. Our elders. Our friends. Our neighbors. Our communities.

That’s why I’m speaking up.

Not because I’ve been in tech for decades. Not because I’ve got a fancy degree. But because we can’t afford to sit this one out. We’ve missed too many revolutions already. We don’t get another pass.

If we want to make sure this wave doesn’t drown us — we have to learn to surf it. Better yet, we need to shape it.

Why Fear (or Fun) Isn’t Enough

Too often, I hear people say, “AI is going to replace me.” But here’s the irony — many of us are already using it daily. We unlock phones with facial recognition. Get directions from GPS. Let Netflix (powered by AI algorithms) recommend our next movie. AI is already baked into our everyday lives — quietly, invisibly, and powerfully.

The problem isn’t that we’re behind. The problem is that we don’t believe we belong. We think we need permission. Or perfection. Or a Ph.D. But the truth is, none of that is required. All we need is the willingness to try, the courage to be uncomfortable, and the mindset to grow. On the other side of that discomfort? Power.

AI isn’t here to take your job. But someone who knows how to use it? They might.

We’ve been locked out of boardrooms, left out of innovation, and made to feel like tech isn’t “for us.” But AI, unlike revolutions of the past, can actually level the playing field — if we choose to show up.

AI Is a Tool. Will We Use It or Be Used By It?

Want to launch a business? AI can help. Want to teach a class, build an app, design a flyer, or write your first book? AI’s got you. Want to learn something new — even in your native language, even at midnight, even with zero budget? AI is ready.

The opportunity is there. The tools are there.

What’s missing? Belief. Too many of us don’t believe we’re allowed to be creators, innovators, and owners in this space. But we’ve faced harder things. We’ve taught ourselves new jobs, learned new languages from telenovelas We’ve figured out life in a world that wasn’t built for us. This is no different.

And now, others are watching. Our kids. Our peers. Our communities. They’re waiting for a signal. Let’s give them one.

We Belong in the Lab, the Boardroom, and at the Table

We can’t afford to let another technological revolution pass us by. Not this time. We have to move — not as users but as owners. Of our ideas. Our data. Our future.

It’s time to stop waiting and start building. Because this isn’t just about AI. It’s about agency. About writing ourselves into the next chapter, instead of letting someone else write it for us. And if we know anything about history, we know how those stories usually end.

Let’s write a different one.

What Now? Start.

Don’t wait until it’s perfect. Don’t wait until you’re ready. Don’t wait for permission. Start small. Use the tools. Learn the language. Ask questions. Share what you know. Lift others as you rise. Because this moment isn’t about machines. It’s about us. Our voice. Our vision. Our responsibility to shape what’s next.

AI won’t write our history. We will.
